What does it take to be a social media community manager? Better yet a good one. When looking at any managerial position it is so much more than just a shiny nameplate and a big office. Being a manager is someone who goes above and beyond for their members. So how does one become a good social media community manager?

  1. The Golden Rule
Yes it is one of the oldest sayings in the book but it still reigns true even in the digital world. Especially in a managerial position it is crucial to treat your members with kindness and respect. If you do not have good rapport with your community then you have completely lost your purpose.
  2. Lead By Example
No one likes a bossy boots. Community members will not be encouraged to participate if they are being ordered around. Being a manager means you are a leader but also a member of the community as well. That being said it is your responsibility to lead the way and set the tone for the community. By doing so this will help members to understand the common purpose/goal of the community because their leader has paved the way for them.
  3. Be Actively Involved
Have you ever had a workplace where you never saw the manager? If yes, then you understand how that could be frustrating. Does it make you think ‘well if the manager doesn’t have to show up why do I?’ This then leads to the downfall of communities due to the lack of involvement from the leaders because it shows the level of apathy they have for their members. So please, stay actively present within your community because you will build that trust and respect from the community members if you stay involved.

4. Same Playing Field
Regardless of title within the community every member should a have mutual respect for one another. No member wants to feel inferior from another because if they do they are we less encouraged to be involved or contribute to the community. You will then miss amazing opportunities your members could have to offer because they could feel unqualified to express their ideas. Yes you have responsibilities to uphold but that does not mean you are above anyone.

5. Stay Hungry
As well all know the digital world is constantly growing and changing with so many new things to discover. As a manager it is good to always stay hungry for discovering new content. Whether it is finding a new podcast or a content creator, you want to get involved with what the digital world has to offer. This will then help your community to grow and advance because you are constantly looking for something new.

6. Make Time
No community members want to view their manager as a stranger. Yes we all have a job to do but in order to build a healthy community takes a little bit more than just a “Hi, how are you?” from a manager. Make time to get to know your community members on a personal level. No, you do not have to ask them for their life story or be best friends but let them know you care for them as a person outside of the community. Members will feel valued and safe because you have taken the time to get to know them without an incentive. This will create strong relationships with your members and create a healthy space for the community.
